Fixed

If you happen to be passing the Design Museum out on the very bijou more-East-than-Tower-Bridge section of the South Bank, have a look in The Tank.

The Wilson Brothers, designers, cyclists and fixed wheel enthusiasts, have a small show of four bikes. There’s a brilliant old “safety bicycle”, a prime courier bike, a lovely Dolan track bike and a concept bike created by the brothers. Worth checking out, but it’s only there until 9th September.

Keirin-fest 2007

Important update! The event has been cancelled due to lack of entries. Boo!

Herne Hill Velodrome plays host to Kerin Fest 2007 on the 27th August - Bank Holiday Monday.

Expect super high speed racing, Japanese food, beer, a bike jumble sale and general carnage.

For those who have no idea what this is all about, Keirin is a mass start track race where riders are paced by a derny which leaves the track for the riders to sprint for 6-700 metres (usually 2.5 laps), sometimes reaching speeds over 40mph. It originated in Japan and is hugely popular over there and races are even gambled on. Crashes are common and brutal.

Equipment is strictly controlled by NJS (Nihon Jitensha Shinkokai) and much coveted by many, us included. Well, by Will and me at least, I’m not sure Pierre sees what all the fuss is about.

Can’t wait to see some? Recently recorded races are online. If you are on Japanese time (or an insomniac), a live race feed is also available. Something that plays Windows Media required.
